Yeah, as long as there isn't any new story, that would be fine. If the characters appear in other games/media, I wouldn't consider that as a continuation of the canon. Same goes when a game is remastered/released for different platforms - it's kind of like when an old movie gets re-released on Blu-ray or something, isn't it? As long as there isn't like, a continuation of the plot or something, then it's fine!
