Wimsey Quote Database

The hardest thing about writing Peter Wimsey fanfic is the quotes. Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane have an encyclopedic knowledge of the literature of their era (and the literature that was considered classic/important in that era), and quote it often.

Today I posted on the Gaud Squad Discord that it would be awesome if we had a searchable database of the literature and poetry that they knew or could reasonably be expected to know, searchable by keyword and theme, so that one could look things up easily. And that I would be willing to do the data entry, but had not the technical skills to set it up.
supertailz responded by setting up a Notion instance and is noodling around with the technical aspects of it, so it looks like this is happening!

The easy part is getting the literature that Peter and Harriet quote added--all I have to do is read through the books (no hardship there!) and source the quotations. Although I know there are some annotated versions floating around, and if anyone has a copy of the annotations, that would be lovely.

The hard part is getting the right mix of things that Peter and Harriet would have known. Because what is considered "classic literature" changes over time. Some things rise in acclaim, some things fall out of favor. What would be really handy is a curriculum for Eton ca. 1900 and for Oxford ca. 1910, but so far I haven't found anything. Does anybody know how to search "what literary works were considered classics in 1920"? Or have a good list of where to start?

Challenge #1

Journaling Prompt: Light up your journal with activity this month. Talk about your goals for July or for the second half of 2025.
Creative Prompt: Shine a light on your own creativity. Create anything you want (an image, an icon, a story, a poem, or a craft) and share it with your community.

I don't have much to say on the journaling front other than Happy Canada Day! to my fellow Canadians. I can't believe its July 1st already.  No goals other than to keep house searching (I'm so tired of house hunting)

For the creative prompt I made a banner for my most recent fic that I created for [community profile] holmestice

Singularly Unique
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (Granada)
Relationship: Holmes/Watson
Rating: T
Word Count: 3220 words
Summary: Watson is happy with his life with Holmes, but things are going to change after a man from Watson's past contacts him.

Lastly, if you like John Watson and are looking for some inspiration, I'm currently hosting a prompt fest over on AO3 in celebration of Watson's birthday. It's open to all Watsons from all adaptations. Come leave a prompt or claim a prompt! More info can be found here.

Also, thank you to all my dreamwidth friends who have been helping me promote it.  We're currently up to 9 prompts!  But, hopefully we'll get some more.

I haven't requested A/B/O, but you're OK to mix that in with whatever other scenario as long as Elliot's an alpha, Liv's an omega, and Kathy's a beta. (It's pretty obvious that Instinct imprinted on me, lol, isn't it?)

I also didn't request Sharing a Bed but I'm always good with that trope being thrown into any fic.

Below are further thoughts, under various headings.

And now for the requested tropes, many of which can be combined:

First and Second Quarter Reading Wrap-Up

With everything going on I completely missed my first quarter wrap-up, so here are the first and second wrap-ups combined. Here is my book bingo card, I was hoping to be further along at this point, but with everything going on it just didn't happen.  I'm currently reading a Star Trek tie-in novel, The Ice Trap, so that will probably find its way into the next quarter's wrap-up. Books I completed in the first and second quarter are:

Aurora by David Koepp - a thriller about most of planet losing electricity for a long period of time after a major sun flare.  It was an interesting idea, and it was pretty good.  My only complaint is that the author skips over what I thought would be the most interesting part, a group of neighbours coming together to survive during this time period.  After a lot of build up and groundwork, he kind of does a time skip to where they are already a well functioning group, and I would have really liked to have seen the process.

The Invisible Library
by Genevieve Cogman - mixed feelings on this fantasy story, I liked the concept and the characters, but the story was very chaotic, there was almost too much going on, too many antagonists, and some stuff is left unexplained.  It is the first in a series, but I'm not sure if I will pick up the second book or not.

The Shots You Take by Rachel Reid - M/M hockey romance, I did mostly like this one, but you really have to suspend some major disbelief in order to enjoy it.  It takes place at and just after the funeral of one of the main character's beloved father, and as someone who has lost a parent I just don't believe for a minute that you would have the energy to give a shit whether your ex showed up at the funeral or not, but of course that wouldn't make for a very compelling story.  Also, the one character has to forgive some really shitty past behaviour from their love interest, it makes sense in the story b/c he wasn't "out" and didn't acknowledge his feelings, but it may turn some people off.

Magician: Apprentice by Raymond E. Feist - old school fantasy, with all the classic elements, species, etc, although there is also a bit of a possibly sci-fi twist.  I did like the two main POVs, Pug and Tomas, they're boys we're following from the time they are around 12 to 16, as their world is preparing for war.  I will say, like a lot of classic fantasy written by men, there are a scant few women characters and they're not written all that well, although they aren't overly sexualized, so I guess that is a plus.  This one is also the first in a series, but we'll see if I continue it or not.

Red Heir by Lisa Henry and Sarah Honey - this one is a light, fun fantasy,  Two red-headed young men are sharing a prison cell when a group of adventurers comes to rescue the lost heir that is supposed to have red hair, they don't know who is the right person so they take them both.  The story is mostly the group getting out of scraps and the two red heads bickering, until oh no are those feelings!  There were times where I wished that the characters would go a little bit deeper, and that we would get a better understanding of their backstories, but it just wasn't that type of book, it was just meant to be a light, easy read.

The Stolen Rubens - I listened to this one on the Classic Detective Stories Podcast, it was an alright mystery.  The detective was referred to as the "human computer" and he was able to figure out how an art heist occurred.  It was obviously very Holmes inspired, but the human computer lacked charm of Holmes.

Secrets in the Snow
by J. Jefferson Farjeon - another one from the Classic Detective Stories Podcast, I liked this one.  A young woman gets caught in a snowstorm. At first she comes off as a bit ditsy, but she is good at noticing things and how things are not quite right, which leads her to helping solve a mystery.

One Night in Hartswood
by Emma Denny - M/M Historical romance, I just finished this recently, it is very sweet.  The two men are travelling together but they are hiding their true identities from each other.  I wish they had reveled their identities sooner, because I felt like that was keeping them from deeply connecting on some levels, but I understand why it didn't happen because of plot reasons.

Life in the Mid-Century US: a primer for writers of MASH fic

I read a lot of MASH fic recently, and while most of it was very good, there were also a ton of inaccuracies about what mid-century America was like. I'm not an expert, but at the same time, I did listen to my parents and grandparents when they talked about what life was like when they were younger. And also, I know what's changed within my lifetime (born in 1982), and quite a lot of things people today take for granted are actually new within my lifetime, and thus not around prior to the 1980s. Now, this is fanfic, and if you don't care about historical accuracy in your fic, that is a fine and valid choice and I salute you. If, however, you do want to at least try to avoid major gaffes, here are things I've noticed that people get wrong a lot:

Promoting My Watson Fest

Does anyone have any ideas of where I can promote my Watson Birthday Prompt Fest? My post on Tumblr is getting likes/reblogs, but I don't seem to be getting actual prompts. I have made a post on fandom calendar. I tried looking up Holmes communities on Dreamwidth, but most of them seem to be dead. If anyone has suggestions I'd appreciate it.

[community profile] intoabar: Finally Wrote Something!

I had different ideas for my assignment for this challenge, but every time I sat down to write I could not even get one word on the page.

I've finally written a story. And fortunately we had an extra week this year because the mod had something going on the day it would normally be due. So instead of last Sunday, it's due tomorrow.

The story is very rough and I don't feel like it's a very inspired idea. It also feels a bit of a cheat. And there's no time to get it beta'd. I'll spend the next few hours going through to see where I can fix it, tweak it, then post.

At least I got something written though, and I can always fix it afterward. And I have an additional entry into my Mulan/AtLA series.

Fannish 50 Challenge 2025: Post # 19: the infamous due South troll

If you are in due South fandom you know about the "infamous due South troll," she of many names and one obsession: for decades she has been seeking out due South fic and vids that don't jibe with her personal opinion about which ships and which storylines are "true or not". She was flaming me even before I posted my first fic...back in 2011 she flamed my comment that I made on YouTube about a due South vid that I liked, telling me what was "wrong" with the perspective of the vid and how I was "wrong" for liking it. She actively seeks out for reading and for watching stuff that she knows she won't like and then she reads it or watches it and then she spews out her hatred. The last most recent time that she flamed me -- before TODAY -- was in 2023 when she pounced on a fic that I had written eleven years earlier and said hateful things about it -- I did not respond to her hate and TODAY she returned to that same fic and in even greater detail than previously FLAMED THE SAME FIC A SECOND TIME. Hells, that is some tenacity -- REREADING a fic to which she had already "objected" (she told me that she "disagreed" with my fic) and then commenting further in the face of my previous non-response. /o\

Just Married 2025

My general preferences are here.

DNW: unrequested mundane AU | female characters in fridges | non-con | violent dub-con | graphic violence | gore | graphic sexual violence | cruelty/death to animals | cruelty/death to children | requested character death | unrelieved grimdark | bigotry by the good guys | first or second POV | reader fic | ABO | soulbonds | wildly OOC in a non-cracky way

SMUT DNW: creampies | the word “cunt” | anal | hate each other out of bed | underage | incest

MAYBE: no-harm dubcon (sex pollen or “fertility artifact”) | period typical attitudes | infidelity | power dynamic

Shower the treats like rice!

I love weddings.  You cannot be too fluffy or have too many details, or get into too-ridiculous or too-complicated situations.  You want to go way over the top, I am your girl.

These are a few of my very favorite tags:

Wedding Reception - Unmarried Couple Fantasize About Their Future While At Friend's Wedding  - YES  I love it!  The whole, that could be us factor!  Also here for frank discussions of we are not having X at our wedding sort of stuff

Wedding Reception - Catching the Bouquet – Yes it’s old-fashioned and silly and I love it.  I especially love conspiracies to make sure someone specific gets it.

Wedding Ceremony - The Wedding Day Disaster You Laugh About in the Future  - So my first husband had to bribe a friend to overnight the ring because he left it on the kitchen counter (LDR).  It seemed huge at the time.  I’m open to ideas as long as they can still get married and aren’t too unhappy!

Proposal - While Watching Happy Friends Get Married – YES, although here maybe looking for that moment of I should ask, because it’s rude to propose at someone else’s wedding.  Or a private proposal that doesn’t detract.

Wedding - Something Old New Borrowed and Blue – I love this.  I could read a thousand variations on it, because what I love is seeing what’s important to the characters.

Wedding - That One Perfect Photograph at Your Wedding – That one moment you remember forever.

Anniversary - 1st Year – I love this opportunity to look forward and look back and be in love!

Wedding - Family Heirlooms Passed Down For Wedding – This can be tied to old/borrowed/new/blue but I love that little connection to the past or a loved one you miss.

Dimension Travel - Getting Together After Meeting The AU Married Couple Version of Themselves – I love the meeting AND the realization and the getting together.

Wedding Reception - Best Man and Maid of Honor Get Together – It’s a classic, especially if the bride and groom are trying to throw them together.

Bachelor(ette) Party – Hijinks & Shenanigans – Also a classic, as long as the hijinks do not involve infidelity.

Not much is going on in life. Just the same real life stuff - consulting with Capgemini, doing things with my family, keeping up the house and the pets, and trying to make some passive income with Poshmark and Pangobooks.

I'm doing some reading too, and I'm almost finished with The Apothecary Diaries Light Novel volume 4. I have some library books that I'm reading, mostly cookbooks, and reading some manga here and there from Hoopla through the library.

I've been doing some outlining for the stories for the fic fests I joined for the summer. Hopefully I can get writing them soon!

Trying to save money as best I can and eliminating eating out as much. We just painted the spare room in the basement which will become Juliet's playroom, and this weekend we'll be moving her in, as well as cleaning and organizing the basement and the garage. It's going to be a hot one this weekend so we'll be staying indoors mostly.

During all of this, there is one thing that brings me absolute joy and that would be my garden. I reactivated my Flickr account so I could post my garden pictures there, and not just on Facebook.

I will have to make sure to water vigorously this weekend as we are going to reach the upper 90s here in the Chicagoland.

Stay cool, everyone.
