A very belated watching post

I see the last time I properly did some little write-ups of anything I'd been watching was about June, and that was a catch up one, so I'm forever out of date, but I'll see if I can do better now!

Suspected Person (1942) - a UK B-movie thriller, which I recorded off TPTV because it featured Clifford Evans, Patricia Roc and William Hartnell, and indeed, generally, the only thing worth saying about it was that I did enjoy watching Patricia Roc and Clifford Evans play brother and sister, and William Hartnell did his best to try and steal the film in his scenes, but everything else was very meh and run of the mill. Fine if you want a bonus bit of Hartnell! Or CE & PR, but not of any note for anything else, really. I only wrote this here, because it does prove I still have judgment and therefore my comments on the rest might be worth more.

Death Valley (BBC TV 2025) This was one of the many cosy detective shows I watched over the summer, and it was pretty good! A bit uneven, in that the two main characters were great & so was their odd friendship, but quite a few of the mysteries were very so-so, even for this kind of thing, although they did get better. Gwyneth Keyworth as Janie Mallowan, socially awkward detective with issues, and Timothy Spall as John Chapel, reclusive actor who used to play Maigret/Poirot her favourite TV detective Caesar, were very good together, though & I enjoyed them a lot.

Stephen Poliakoff's The Tribe (BBC 1998), only available via somebody's VHS recording on YT, unless you live in R1, where you might be able to snag a DVD, but the BBC somehow didn't even include it on their Poliakoff at the BBC set. (Why, yes, I AM annoyed that I cannot have a DVD of the Stephen Poliakoff that stars Jeremy Northam, even if it seems reasonable even on small acquaintance with Poliakoff to suggest that it is second tier Poliakoff. Is that not what completist DVD sets for significant playwrghts are for?) It stars Jeremy Northam, Joely Richardson, Anna Friel, Trevor Eve & Laura Fraser, plus Jonathan Rhys Meyers & Julian Rhind-Tutt & is all about a very 90s collection of concerns - creating different kinds of living spaces and the hypocrisy of those who grew up in the 60s having the sexual freedom of expression and creativity that they refuse to allow the 90s to have.

More details about The Tribe ) Anyway, it and its themes still linger in my head, so I'm very grateful to the YT uploader.

The Halfway House (1944), starring Mervyn & Glynis Johns and Esmond Knight. This is another film I recorded off TPTV because it's summary was "a bunch of strangers get stranded together." For WWII moralising and ghosts )

Anyway, I have no regrets over every film I've recorded off TPTV because of the summary being "bunch of random mid-century Brits get stranded somewhere," and I will continue to snag any others I see - if there are any more!

ABC fics!

I've been seeing this meme around a lot, so let me revive my dw for five minutes just to do it. :D

How many letters of the alphabet have you used for starting a fic title? One fic per line, 'A' and 'The' do not count for 'A' and 'T'.

I'm only doing one fandom (Guardian and Guardian RPF) because I can. :D I didn't look at any art until I did all the letters, and then I added art for the two letters that didn't have fics (J and V). (And whenever there were options to choose Zhubai, I chose Zhubai, ngl. :D Many letters had 5+ fics to choose from btw, asdfhdjkl;)

I have nothing for U (I have no idea how, it's such a useful letter, and now I want to name a fic un[something] asap ;D), X (even though I've possibly started actual fics with 'Xiao Bai' or 'Xiao Wei', but not titles) and Z (I have definitely started fics with 'Zhao Yunlan' and possibly 'Zhu Yilong' too). (I'm getting a kick out of the fact that these four names are 4 out of 4 of my blorbos. :D)

So 23/26! And now onto the actual list:

A - As My Fingers Tremble (Zhubai, E, ~2K words)
B - But I Know Where to Start (Zhubai, M, ~1K words)
C - Caught You (drama Weilan, E, ~200 words)
D - Do You Want Me to Mean It? (Zhubai, G, ~1K words)
E - Emphatic No (novel Weilan & Daqing, T, 300 words)
F - Five More Minutes (Zhubai, G, ~700 words)
G - Gods Gone Wild (novel Kunlun/Zhao Yunlan, E, ~700 words)
H - How Do You Want Me? (Zhubai, E, 300 words)
I - I Look Over at You and See Sunshine (Zhubai, T, ~900 words)
J - Just Come Home (no fic -> honorary art; novel Weilan, G)
K - Kissing It Better (Zhubai, E, ~2K words)
L - Late (Zhubai, G, 200 words)
M - Match Made in Science (Lin Jing/Ye Zun, G, ~300 words)
N - No Coming Back From That (Zhubai, T, ~400 words)
O - Only Ever You (drama Weilan, E, ~2K words)
P - Poems on Your Skin (drama Weilan, E, ~2K words)
Q - A Quiet Celebration (Zhubai, T, ~300 words)
R - Ruby Insides (novel/drama Weilan, M, 200 words)
S - So Much More Delicious (Zhubai, M, ~400 words)
T - Taking What's (Not) Mine (Weilanzun, E, ~1,5K words)
U
V - Very Lucky (no fic -> honorary art; Zhubai, G)
W - When Dreams Come True (Zhubai, T, 300 words)
X
Y - You Melt Like Sugar (Zhubai, M, ~400 words)
Z

AO3 Alphabet Meme

All the cool kids are doing it, so I guess I will too:

How many letters of the alphabet have you used for starting a fic title? One fic per line, ‘A’ and 'The’ do not count for 'a’ and ’t’. Post your score out of 26 at the end, along with your total fic count.

A. Anatomy of a Secret--Jadzia Dax in the Reboot universe.
B. the bells are going to chime--My Fair Lady, Eliza/Colonel Pickering post-movie
C. Currency--Star Wars/Babylon 5, Han and Chewie take a job carrying cargo to a place so far out in Wild Space they've never even heard of the Empire. Or the Jedi.
D. The Desert Between--Reboot, Spock/Uhura, and vulcan worldbuilding
E. Essential To Your Own--TNG, Data/Geordi
F. Family Matters (The Things Inside Remix)--BSG, Dee is on Pegasus, finding her place. A Six is on New Caprica, learning what she doesn't know. Lee Adama is a Cylon prisoner, but this is not his story. A New Caprica AU.
G. The Genetics Factory--Criminal Minds/Stargate, In Detroit, homeless addicts are turning up dead. But there's more to the case than meets the eye, and the BAU finds themselves looking for something they don't understand. For Derek, it gets personal.
H. The Heart's Desire--Rivers of London, Abigail has earned her right to become a practitioner of magic. Now, the training begins.
I. Interview with the Robot--Fandom for Robots
J. Just Like Old Times--Stargate SG-1, Teal'c and Daniel, on an adventure.
K. Kitty and Georgy (The Healing Old Hurts Remix)--Pride and Prejudice, Kitty is often ill, but she is determined to live her best life anyway.
L. Little Ship Lost--TNG, On a routine mission, a wormhole opens up near Enterprise, and a ship pops out. It's challenging to rescue people who don't trust you.
M. Matters of Perspective--TNG, Picard and Guinan post Time's Arrow
N. Not Place, But People--Enterprise, The older Enterprise wasn't destroyed after all. When it limps back to Earth, Trip finds Lorian and invites him home to meet the family.
O. The Offer--Vorkosiverse, An AU where Aral didn't survive Mad Yuri's Massacre, but his sister did.
P. Pale Battalions--SG-1, Teal'c goes home after a glorious battle in Apophis' name.
Q.
R. Revenge of the Zillo Beast--Star Wars, Mace and Anakin have killed the Zillo Beast every way they can think of in different time loops. Maybe killing the Beast won't solve the problem?
S. Schoolwork--DS9, Jake misses his dad, now he's with the Prophets, but he still has his friends, his family, and his career.
T. Third Chance--Star Trek, AU, This isn't the first time Ro has had to start her life over, nor the first time she's had to deal with people who don't like or trust her.
U. Undiscovered Stars--Star Wars/Star Trek, Just how far out in the Unknown Regions was he, Lando wondered, that they didn't use hyperdrives?
V. Vast Beyond Knowing (The Details Remix)--Star Wars. Anakin, Luke, Rey. The desert taught them much. But not everything.
W. Wachet Auf--Rivers of London, In 1940, Nightingale has to catch a Nazi spy armed with a magical device. In 2016, Nightingale and others fall into a magical coma, and Peter Grant must figure out why it happened and how to end it.
X. X is for Xenophobia--SG-1, Little Jake Carter knew all about people who Weren't Like Us.
Y.
Z.

22/26, not bad. Interesting that I have X but not Y; from looking at other peoples' lists, it's usually the other way around. (If I'd done more Stargate Alphabet Soups, I might have filled in the missing letters.) I have, by the way, written 264 fics in approximately 110 fandoms over the course of almost 20 years. (Some fandoms are squishy, and it depends how you count them.)

(no subject)

This week was about a month long, but it had some good things in it to go with all the busy-ness and the *waves hands at the world in general and my country in particular* absolute crap. So, 3 things:

1) Despite my not having found/made time to do any actual decorating, Halloween seems to be arriving this week anyway. Rude of it to not wait for me. This year I've been invited to a party in a new-to-me neighborhood of Oshkosh, where the party throwers have promised adult beverages and full-sized candy bars in their driveway. This means I can probably just go ahead and eat some of the candy I bought to give out, since I won't be here and who knows what will happen to the bowl I leave out by my own door, right?

2) My youngest niece, Magpie, is now 10 and she's a brain-on-fire sheer delight. She creates graphic novels, composes and choreograhs snuggler (stuffed animal)-performed musicals, develops small business ideas with her friends, takes 3 different dance classes, is up for any art or craft activity we offer her, and is in a community youth chorus and a community youth theater production of Newsies, Jr.. The way the middle schools and the particular academic program she's in work, next year she would have a choice of either staying in the choral music class, which is led by the absolute worst (and shadiest, but he somehow has the entire district admin conned) music teacher I have ever encountered, and boy HOWDY could I fill an entire month's worth of entries with this guy's shenanigans--

--where was I?-- okay, so Magpie either stays in chorus with Mr. Sussy, as she and JuneBug like to call him, or starts orchestra. To qualify for orchestra, she's decided to start cello lessons this year. Her kid-sized cello is as tall as she is. And she is head-over-heels in love with it. She practices without being prompted, unlike piano, where she had to be bribed to even sit at the keyboard. This week they were given their bows to hold and learn about for the first time and she jumped up in class and cheered. This child is a force and I don't know if the world is ready for her, but it desperately needs her. Though she be but little, she is fierce.

3) I pulled myself together enough to sign up for Yuletide. For my assignment, I matched on what is, as I said on Bluesky (I'm there! Hit me up if we haven't connected there already), the most unhinged offer I've ever made. But I went looking at letters this week, saw this prompt, and thought, huh, I could maybe do that. Now that it's my actual assignment and I've taken a close look at the recipient's sign up, letter, and some of their other posts? I just keep finding more things that spark ideas and align with my own interests, and I have madly giggled at least 3 times today thinking of ideas. *rubs hands* In a year when everything outside my little fandom bubble seems to be falling apart even harder than usual, I'm glad to have something so silly and fun to escape to.

And that's it for this time. As JuneBug used to say when he was 2ish, hope you all have a "Happy Day Ween!"

Alphabetical Fic Meme

New-to-me fic meme snagged from [personal profile] astrogirl:

Rules: How many letters of the alphabet have you used for starting a fic title? One fic per line, ‘A’ and 'The’ do not count for 'a’ and ’t’. Post your score out of 26 at the end, along with your total fic count.

LIke [personal profile] astrogirl, I went for the first fic for each letter, saving only once or twice where I really didn't want to, because it's not as if it's a rule in this meme.

A - An Absolutely True And In No Way Fabricated Account of the Difficult, Dangerous and Entirely Improbable Invention of the Biscuit (Bleak Expectations, Sir Philip Bin)
B - Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me (Public Eye, Frank Marker/Helen Mortimer)
C - Cameo (Sapphire & Steel, Jasper, Tin, Jet)
D - Damned Giraffe (Discworld, Death, Death of Rats, A Giraffe)
E - Each A Glimpse And Gone Forever (Chalet School/Doctor Who, Seventh Doctor, Hilda Annersley, Ace McShane)
F - Fading Fast (Spooks, Ruth Evershed/Harry Pearce, Beth Bailey)
G - A Gallifreyan at Blandings (Blandings/Doctor Who, Tenth Doctor, Galahad Threepwood, Earl of Emsworth, Constance Keeble, Beach, the Empress of Blandings).
H - Half an Angel (Shadow of the Tower, Henry VII/Elizabeth of York)
I - I Do, I Do, I Do (The Month of Sundays Remix) (Doctor Who, Thirteenth Doctor/Most of her other selves, Yaz, Graham, Ryan).
J - Jo Grant, Assassin For Hire (Doctor Who. Jo Grant, the Brigadier, Third Doctor).
K - Keeping Secrets (Blake's 7, Dayna Mellanby/Del Tarrant)
L - Ladies in Waiting (The Hardest Part) (15th C RPF, Margaret Beaufort, Elizabeth of York).
M - Made For Each Other (Adam Adamant Lives! Adam Adamant & Georgina Jones).
N - Nature Is Red (Doctor Who, Tenth Doctor/Leela).
O - Of Elements and Existence (Sapphire & Steel/Discworld, Steel, Death, Sapphire, Ridcully, Silver, Nanny Ogg, Granny Weatherwax, Ponder Stibbons).
P - Painted Smiles (Blake's 7, Servalan).
Q - Quandrangle (Sapphire & Steel, Sapphire & Silver & Steel).
R - Random Factors (Good Omens/Doctor Who, Aziraphale, Vicki Pallister).
S - Salt of the Earth (Doctor Who, Mrs Martha Tyler, Jack Harkness, Twelfth Doctor).
T - Take the Second Path (OUaT, Regina Mills/Emma Swan, Rumplestiltskin, Cora Mills).
U - Unbreakable (OUaT, Regina Mills).
V - Valley of the Shadow (Dracula 1968, Jonathan Harker/Mina Harker).
W - Waiting For the Sky to Fall (Enemy at the Door, Philip Martel & Dieter Richter).
X -
Y - you asked me how i knew (my true love was true) (The Lady Vanishes, Iris Henderson/Gilbert Redman).
Z -

That was an interesting way to go through the fic, and a pretty representative mix of fandoms, really. Most surprising thing to me was that I only have one work beginning with K. And that's 24/26, as I don't have either an X or a Z, but those are hard letters to casually have in your titles. I clearly need to work on that, presumably in the SFF fandoms, heh.

Star Trek Holidays 2025

My general preferences are here.

DNW: unrequested mundane AU | female characters in fridges | non-con | violent dub-con | graphic violence | gore | graphic sexual violence | cruelty/death to animals | cruelty/death to children | requested character death | unrelieved grimdark | bigotry by the good guys | first or second POV | reader fic | ABO | soulbonds | wildly OOC in a non-cracky way

SMUT DNW: creampies | the word “cunt” | anal | hate each other out of bed | underage | incest

I love treats!  Beam them over, the shields are down.

I really love this challenge.  Please know that you can NEVER go wrong with a crossover or mutli-verse crossover (Infinite Spocks in Infinite Timelines?  JUST SMASH EVERYONE TOGETHER AND WAVE YOUR HANDS) and a little cracky is juuuuust right.  I like serious too, but sometimes I am down for "And then, somehow, Palpatine returned" so we can get to the characters doing their thing.  A big “save the multiverse mission” followed by the loudest party ever would be ACES.

I clearly have some favorites.

Just have fun!

Dear Yuletide Author

I don't think I'm hard to write for, but my letters have been hit or miss so I'm trying to do better. Apologies for the essays. When you're a fan of 100 year old series, that no one knows, you tend to ramble a bit in the hopes someone will pick them up.

First for the housekeeping/general stuff

I like canon and backstory/future fic (especially the weird obscure bits, as you can tell by my requests), unexpected crossovers, snark and witty banter, capers and proper adventures and characterization pieces. Feel free to take advantage of this. I'm not particularly fond of AUs or modernizing older fandoms unless the fandom canon is "timeless".

DNW Section: Anything above PG-13 (horror or smut). I don't mind shipping (het/femslash/slash are all fine, incestuous pairings not so much). Racism (including the period-typical stuff found in the original stories) without consequences/pushback. Current events (politics/COVID). Character death. When in doubt, keep your fic about the same level as the source material and you'll be fine.

Hello, yuletide writer!

It's funny, I made my requests without looking at what I asked for last year...and I picked almost all the same stuff as last year. The heart wants what it wants, I guess.

Likes: Kissing, teasing, tension, banter, humor, character ambiguity, sacrifice, found families, pining, slow realizations, fast realizations, the slow burn of desire, explosive confrontations, wry self-knowledge, self-discovery, loyalty, love.

Dislikes: Death, bucketloads of angst with no balance, character-bashing (especially canonical female love interest bashing), incest, non-con, betrayal (including marital infidelity), mpreg, omegaverse, extreme kink unless you run it by me (anonymously) or someone who knows me well. I would prefer to avoid anything that's dark just for the sake of being dark.

Totally up to you: Presence or absence of smut or romance, level of explicitness, presence of additional or original characters.

I am willing to receive treats!

If you have any question whether I might like something, you can ask [personal profile] shrift.

James Asher Vampire Series - Barbara Hambly
(Uh, on the off chance you're not current on all the books, spoilers ahead.)

Lydia and Ysidro are in America, great! James is stuck in the middle of a completely different continent, not so great. I want the band back together!

The constant contradiction at the heart of the relationship has sort of been resolved, now that Ysidro doesn't need to murder people. But there were many, many years when they knew what he was and still chose to be his friends and allies, knowing that his continued survival meant more innocent deaths.

If you want to go the threesome route, I'd love that. I'm less interested in only James/Ysidro or Lydia/Ysidro, though if it's not framed as a betrayal of the other partner, that would help. But if the spirit moves you in that direction, go for it. For gen options, you could explore something of Ysidro's past, or James and Lydia's fear over parenting a child in a world where vampires exist.

DNW: Death, rape/non-con, mpreg, omegaverse, human characters turned into vampires, breakup of the marriage

Nero Wolfe - Rex Stout
Years ago, Yuletide kicked off my love for Archie/Saul, and each year, there are a few more stories (including some amazing ones written for me!). But I'm greedy.

Canonically, it's kind of fuzzy whether Saul has a wife and family, because it seems to depend on the book. I don't mind if a wife exists, but I would prefer it if Saul doesn't cheat on his wife. So if you're going for Archie/Saul (always good!), please either have them divorced/profoundly separated, or make her not exist. I can see how the pairing might not be your thing, and if it's not, I would be perfectly happy with a mystery kind of thing, or a poker-playing scene, or anything where those two guys interact. Because they're hot and competent. Also, feel free to go crazy, if you want to, in terms of the setting. Anywhere in canon is fine, present-day is fine (Wolfe vs. the Internet!), even the future is fine (Wolfe vs. artificial gravity!).

DNW: Death, rape/non-con, infidelity, mpreg, omegaverse

God's Own Country

This movie is so spare and quiet and and gentle and perfect. I love how Gheorghe basically has to teach Johnny to be a functioning human, and how loving Johnny becomes once someone treats him kindly. Anything during or post-movie would be great, or pre-canon Gheorghe pre-movie.

DNW: Death, rape/non-con, infidelity (though mention of the canonical infidelity is fine, just no new infidelity), mpreg, omegaverse, breakup of the relationship

Young Wizards series
I love that Nita and Kit have reached the stage of awkwardly growing and fumbling their way through their changing relationship, and there's definitely the potential of a Thing with Ronan. Any exploration of that would be fun. Feel free to address the physical aspect, and age them as much as you need to to feel comfortable -- I wouldn't want to read anything explicit between them unless they're 17 or 18.

Otherwise, pretty much anything with the three of them would be great. Shit-talking the US vs. Ireland, making a meal, mocking Dairine and Roshaun and their own weird Thing, just taking a moment to be friends and not have to save the world. Don't feel any obligation to get into the more technical aspects of the magic unless that's something you enjoy.

DNW: Death, rape/non-con, infidelity, mpreg, omegaverse, breaking up

Alphabet fic meme

Taken from [personal profile] tellshannon815, but I've seen a few others also doing it as well.

Rules: How many letters of the alphabet have you used for [starting] a fic title? One fic per line, ‘A’ and 'The’ do not count for 'a’ and ’t’. Post your score out of 26 at the end, along with your total fic count.

A — Ache Not Use (Dead Boy Detectives, Edwin/Cat King)
B — Bonfire Mishap (Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley)
C — Culottes (Doctor Who, Thirteen/Missy drabble)
D — Desire Exposed (Sherlock Holmes Granada, Holmes/Watson)
E — Except For This One (Star Trek: TOS, T'Pring/Stonn)
F —  Fevered Faint (Sherlock Holmes Granada, Holmes/Watson)
G — Good Fashion (MCU, Loki/Mobius)
H — Homes on Distant Moons (OFMD, Ed/Izzy, Sci-fi AU)
I — Illuminating, My Sweet (Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley)
J — Jewel Tones (OFMD, Stede & Ed & Izzy drabble)
K — Knowledge From Light Reading (Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley, and implied SPN)
L — Little Brother (Batman, Tim & Dick drabble)
M — Make This Make Sense (Doctor Who, Twelve/Missy)
N — No Relief At The Club (OFMD, Ed/Izzy/Stede)
O — Opened Her Arms To Me (Star Trek: TOS, Scotty/Uhura)
P — Poinsettia Presenting Prettily (Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley)
Q — Questioning Attraction (Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley)
R — Remembrance Passing By (The Old Guard, Joe/Nicky)
S — Shelter For My Bones (OFMD, Ed/Izzy/Stede, WIP that I swear I mean to finish some day!)
T — Two Girlfriends (Star Trek: Lower Decks, Tendi/Mariner/T'Lyn)
U — Unseen Angel (SPN, Sam & Cas)
V — Valentine's Day Gift (Doctor Who, Donna/Rose Tyler drabble)
W — Where I Should Be (Star Trek: Voyager, Janeway/Seven of Nine)
X —
Y — You Are Not A Freak Show (Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley)
Z —

Well, I got 24!  Try as I might I couldn't find anything starting with an X or a Z.

Yuletide 2025 - Dear Yuletide Writer...

Happy Seventeenth Yuletide  to Me!  I am as excited as the first one, and I hope you have a delightful time writing and reading!

My general preferences are here.  You can also use the "dear writer" tag but TBH I copy/paste letters a lot, so for fandoms I frequently request, this letter has the most updated version.

I AM OPEN TO TREATS, ALL THE TREATS YOU WANT TO WRITE.

Optional details are optional, but I love a good chatty letter.  I want to give you something to latch on to but don't feel constrained.  I have more to say about some but some of that is just more time requesting them.

Remember, whatever you write, I will love!  I know 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 has been rough on a lot of people, so please don't stress out too much because Yuletide will be wonderful!  2025 has had some good moments and some not-so good moments, so let's celebrate/escape  with awesome fic!  These are a mix - 1 repeat request, 1 repeat fandom, and 3 new (for Yuletide) requests.

Crossovers are definitely welcome, as are AUs!  If you cross it over with Clue or an Agatha Christie fandom/detective (Poirot, Marple, Ariadne Oliver, And Then There Were None) I'm good with anything - otherwise, see my preferences - cracky or serious crossovers welcome.  I also welcome any and all crossovers involving Nancy Drew.

I do enjoy the trappings of the Christmas holiday (mistletoe, gifts, hot chocolate, oh no we're snowed in together and must stay warm somehow... or we're trapped with a killer, family togetherness, snowball fights, traveling over the river and through the terminal) but do not require them.  If they work though, by all means, take advantage of it.

And again, have fun!

Starfall Stories 50

I've left it a while since I did a crosspost for [community profile] rainbowfic, which was because I was doing a very long sequence divided up into five parts and wasn't sure what to do about it now it's complete - it's something like 28k altogether (this is what has been absorbing my whole writing time for four months, when I've had any). Anyway, I've decided I might as well crosspost all the parts at once and move on. People certainly aren't obliged to read any of it, let alone all of it.

On the Naming of James Buchanan Barnes

I was re-reading some old MCU fic, and in the fic Steve says that Bucky was named for President Buchanan. Which Doylistically he was, but ... there's no reason he has to be from an in-universe perspective.

"James" was an incredibly common first name. The Social Security Administration publishes lists of how popular various names have been over the years; in the 1910s, when James and Steve were born, "James" was the third most popular name for boys. 275,000 baby boys were named "James" in that decade, which, given the size of the population, means that there were a lot of James' everywhere. Very common name.

Ah, but what of Buchanan, you say! Surely there could be no reason to give someone the middle name "Buchanan" if it's not naming him after someone famous! ... and no, actually. While people sometimes were named after famous people or political leaders (just like today), there's actually a more common reason to do it. It was a fairly common thing in the 19th Century for people to have a "last" name as a middle name, often their mother's maiden name, and people still do that today sometimes. Steve's middle name is "Grant", for example; "Grant" was a relatively common surname but (at the time) extremely uncommon as a first name. Steve was almost certainly given the middle name "Grant" to honor someone whose last name was Grant; it was probably his mother's maiden name. Buchanan is a relatively common Scottish name; it's not one of the top ten or anything, but the Buchanan clan is one of respectable size and power. In the same way, there is a very good chance that James was given the middle name "Buchanan" to honor someone whose last name was "Buchanan," quite probably his mother. And for a first name they gave him the third most common name for boys, and maybe didn't realize that there was a President by that name. Especially if they were immigrants, or weren't very well educated. (A lot of people in that generation had only a grade school education, or maybe a middle school education; only 10% of all 14-17 year olds attended high school in the US in 1900; there were still states where even elementary school wasn't required until 1918!) James Buchanan is not one of the Presidents that people talk about much outside history classes, and even then, a lot of history classes don't go into a lot of detail on him besides "last President before the Civil War." Yes, he was a bad President and one of the reasons the US Civil War became inevitable, but there were a lot of factors that were a lot more important.

I think "we liked the name James, and we wanted to honor his mother's family by giving him their last name as a middle name" is a far more likely scenario than consciously deciding to name their kid after President James Buchanan.

On a completely different note, if you want to write an AU where Bucky escaped Hydra early and made a new life for himself ... there's a late-20th-Century composer named James Barnes. He wrote concert band music. Here are some of his pieces: Symphonic Overture, Symphony No. 2, Third Symphony ("The Tragic")Fantasy Variations on a Theme by Nicolo PaganiniAlvamar Overture.
